Why the Leaping Bunny "Cruelty Free" Certification is Misleading

You're out shopping for cosmetics (or something else to help you feel pretty) and you're trying to be kind to animals in the process.

That's awesome! I applaud you for caring.

You see the Leaping Bunny, it's the right color, good for your skin, etc. and a good price, too. So you buy it and think you've done a good thing.

And you tried! You really, really tried!

But...

As a card-carrying vegan for almost a decade, I'm sorry to tell you that you've been misled!

The Leaping Bunny is about not testing on animals. Now, don't get me wrong, it's a great thing when any company chooses the more compassionate route of not testing on animals. There's literally no reason to do it and lots of other ways to ensure product safety.

The problem is, products that are Leaping Bunny certified MAY contain animal products such as beeswax, gelatin, etc. They may also contain palm or almond oils, the production of which is killing orangutans and bees respectively. This makes them not vegan in my book!

And the fact is that any time an animal product is used, there's cruelty and abuse involved. There's no way around it in today's world. I don't care how "ethical" the company is in every other aspect. If they're using animal products, somewhere along the line another living being is being hurt.

So, if you really want to be sure you're using products that are TRULY cruelty free, you need to do more than look for the Leaping Bunny.

You need to look for VEGAN products without palm or almond oils. Anything else, I'm sorry to tell you, some ONE, some BEING was hurt in the process of making it.

You could also become comfortable with your own natural beauty, but that's a subject for another post. :)
